Samsung Unveils 21.5″ Touchscreen Refrigerator

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is currently underway, with Samsung already drawing attention for its unveiling of a new “smart” refrigerator equipped with a massive 21.5″ touchscreen panel on the front door.

When speaking at this year’s CES, the South Korean tech company revealed a new refrigerator featuring a 21.5″ touchscreen. The user interface for the touchscreen is broken into multiples paces, allowing users to send and display photos wireless, create grocery lists, make “to do” lists, post calendars, family photos and more. Dubbed the Samsung “Family Hub Refrigerator,” it seeks to transform the otherwise standard kitchen refrigerator into something much more.

Of course, Samsung isn’t a newcomer to the refrigeration market. In recent years, it has been working vigorously to develop new refrigerators that appeal to the general public. Samsung released a smart refrigerator back in 2014 that features wireless connectivity along with an 8″ LCD display. It also supported various apps for calendars, weather, etc. However, the Family Hub Refrigerator is the company’s first major smart refrigerator with a touchscreen panel — and it’s a massive touchscreen at that.

So, how much does Samsung plan to charge for its Family Hub Refrigerator? There’s still no word yet on exactly how much the company’s new touchscreen-equipped smart refrigerator will cost. Given the fact that the 2014 smart fridge costs $3,000, however, it’s safe to assume the Family Hub will cost at least this amount, possibly even more.

SlashGear explained the Family Hub Refrigerator’s unique feature that allows it to take inventory. The fridge contains internal cameras that snap photos of the contents when the door is closed. These photos can then be used to determine when you need eggs, milk, cheese, etc.

For grocery shopping, there’s the ability to look at the latest photo taken by the built-in cameras which take a shot of the contents of the fridge each time the door is closed. Those images can be viewed remotely from the companion app,” explained the folks at SlashGear.

The Family Hub Refrigerator is just one of the many awesome touchscreen-enabled devices on display at this year’s CES. For more updates on the CES, stay tuned to our blog here at En-Touch!
