New MacBook Pro may Replace Function Keys with Touchscreen

Could you imagine using a touchscreen panel instead of the function keys? Well, that’s exactly what some sources are saying the upcoming Apple MacBook Pro will feature.

Apple’s long-running MacBook Pro hasn’t been updated in more than a year. This means it’s about time for the company to release a new generation of its successful high-end laptop. But you can expect some changes with the next-generation MacBook Pro, including a faster processor, more random access memory (RAM), and various design features. According to a Bloomberg report, which cites Mark Gurman, one of these changes could be the use of an OLED touchscreen interface in place of the function keys.

Apple has tested versions of the upcoming laptops that integrate the scanner beside the new function key display,” reported Bloomberg.

This isn’t the first time that a report has surface suggesting that Apple’s upcoming MacBook Pro will feature an integrated touchscreen interface for its function keys. Other sources say Apple has taken this strategic move to help app developers create custom shortcuts for their respective apps. If you are using Photoshop, for instance, perhaps swiping your finger in a particular direction can open a new window. The great thing about using a touchscreen interface instead of mechanical keys is the near-limitless number of shortcut commands that are possible.

The new touchscreen interface will also likely feature Apple’s signature TouchID fingerprint sensor, which would be a first for the MacBook Pro. Bloomberg says the macOS Sierra update allows users to unlock their computer with Apple Watches. If Apple allows users to unlock their computer using fingerprint, however, it would facilitate the process of logging onto the computer.

Of course, there are other changes being made to Apple’s upcoming MacBook Pro. Reports indicate the next-generation model will be thinner, more sleek, and feature larger trackpads. With that said, it will still feature a smaller “footprint” that previous generations of the MacBook Pro.

Unfortunately, we still don’t know when the new MacBook Pro will be released. The most likely timeframe for an announcement is September, as Apple is expected to announce it’s new iPhone 7 during a September 7 event. Apple hasn’t even mentioned the MacBook at an event since 2015, so it’s safe to say an announcement is long overdue.
